CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE
CRP is an acute-phase protein present in normal serum, which increases significantly after most forms of tissue injuries, bacterial and virus infections, inflammation and malignant neoplasia. During tissue necrosis and inflammation resulting from microbial infections, the CRP concentration can rise up to 300 mg/L in 12-24 hours. Elevations of CRP levels within the conventional reference range have been reported in several studies, where CRP may also be useful in detecting atherosclerotic process and providing important prognostic information about patients with asymptomatic heart disease, unstable angina, and myocardial infarction. More studies in apparently healthy people show that CRP concentration in serum rise long before traditional symptoms of heart and vascular diseases are noticed.
PRINCIPLE
Latex particles coated with anti-CRP are agglutinated when they react with samples that contain low levels of C-reactive protein (CRP). The latex particles agglutination is proportional to the concentration of the CRP in the sample and can be measured by turbidimetry.
